ADA and NYC Code Compliance

Commercial handrails in New York City must meet both ADA standards and the NYC Building Code:

Height: 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosing or ramp surface.

Diameter: Circular cross-section between 1.25 and 2 inches, or non-circular with a perimeter between 4 and 6.25 inches.

Clearance: Minimum 1.5 inches between the handrail and the wall.

Extensions: At least 12 inches beyond the top riser and one tread depth beyond the bottom riser.

Guards: In commercial and multi-family settings, guardrails must be at least 42 inches high (compared to 36 inches residential).

Load: Must withstand 200 pounds of concentrated load and 50 pounds per linear foot.
